Dear Gayle,We have 20 yr old lactating mare. All irndug her pregnancy she just glowed. Her weight was perfect. She had maintain this look for 2-1/2 months. Now her tailhead and backbone are begining to show up. She is not nearly as fleshey as she was a month ago. I realize that the foal will take a lot away from the mare when she is nursing. What can be done to keep weight up and fill in these voids. She is currently getting 3-4 lbs of Triple Crown Growth per feeding along with a 1/2 scoop of beet pulp. She gets 3 flakes morning and evening and is out in the pasture most of the day grazing. She was wormed just days before the birth and has been on a daily wormer since. Is the quality of hay an issue? Most of the hay she gets is grass hay. We do have some hay with a little bit of alfalfa in it ..Help!!
